I am starting a new series here at Home in Wonderland…
I Washed My Hair With Wednesdays.
I’m on a journey to increased sustainability in my lifestyle, and decreasing toxins in my home. (You know, just like most slightly-crunchy millennials. And certainly like most slightly crunchy mom-bloggers).
And while I never promised to be unique or anything but totally random in the topics I write about, I did create this blog to share about whatever tickles my fancy in the moment, and in this moment, washing my hair with random things found in my kitchen does just that.
So here’s what I washed my hair with this week…
Eggs!
For real bro.
I have pretty long hair so I used three eggs beaten together and then poured and worked into wet locks.
It took enormous self-control to shower in lukewarm water so as to avoid a head of scrambled eggs. Even then, once I figured it was probably all rinsed out, I turned up the water temp. I also never said I was a master of self control.
Consequently, I did find a few bits of scrambled whites in my hair later. I brushed them out because what else are you supposed to do when you have scrambled eggs in your hair?
I followed the egg wash up with a rinse of apple cider vinegar with a few drops of lemon essential oil in it.
My hair felt clean and not oily. If anything, it was slightly on the dry side, but still soft and brushable. Word on the interwebs has it that the egg yolk is more moisturizing, while the whites remove oil.
It smelled…clean. I didn’t notice any weird smell from the eggs.
The clean-hair feeling lasted for 4 whole days, which is how long I can go between washes with conventional shampoo. I did feel the need to use some spray-in conditioner to help with tangles afterwards.
The eggs worked well to clean my hair and keep it clean. My hair was not brittle or oily afterwards. However, next time, I think I will separate the yolks from the whites and try using only whites on my roots and the yolks on the rest of my hair. Stay tuned for a future I Washed My Hair With Wednesdays post to hear how that goes!
What are your favorite natural hair-washing methods/materials? Anything you’d like me to try and feature on a future I Washed My Hair With Wednesdays?
